Spryng’s eco-friendly approach: Reducing carbon footprints with SMS

Sustainability has become increasingly crucial in today's day and age. Earth is our shared home and we must protect it. Terms like "eco-friendly," "environmentally conscious," and "sustainable" are popping up more frequently on product labels and in corporate guidelines. While many companies use these terms for product promotion, it's not always clear if these companies are truly making a difference. This is where Spryng is different. We are actively trying to make a difference wherever we can.

SMS provider is an environmentally friendly business

We do our best to keep our ecological footprint small, but our core business as an SMS provider is probably the most sustainable of everything that we do. Sending SMS is a lot more environmentally friendly than sending e-mails. You may ask yourself why that is so? Well, to send e-mails, devices are required that consume a lot of energy. The amount of energy (and therefore CO2 emissions) that is required to manage and transport this data is many times greater than what is used for sending SMS.

Why SMS is 'greener' than e-mail

Researcher/author Mike Berners-Lee (and brother of Tim Berners-Lee, the inventor of the internet) has determined the CO2 footprint of e-mail and an SMS. For a simple e-mail, he came up with 4 grams of CO2 emission. For an SMS (with 160 characters), the researcher calculated an emission of 0.014 grams of CO2, a fraction of e-mail. This is mainly because SMS is sent via the technology of a telephone and not via the Internet.

Less paper waste by sending SMS

In addition to the much lower CO2 emissions used when sending SMS, there is also a “green” advantage of sending SMS. Our customers use less paper by using SMS service (less letters and advertising sent by post and less internal “paper” communication, etc.). Not to mention that SMS marketing campaigns are much more effective than paper advertising. Spryng's core business is already a step in the right direction to a more sustainable future. But what else do we do to really take our sustainability goals to the next level?

Sustainability in everything we do

At Spryng, we want to leave behind a healthy world for our future generations. This means that we are happy to contribute to a more sustainable life and work. We do this in a way that suits Spryng. This means: practical and do-able, clear and honest. Below, we have briefly summarised how this is translated to our workspace:

  • Spryng employees all come to the office by bicycle or public transport.
  • Our procedures and systems have been digitised in such a way that we hardly use any paper, not even for printing.
  • We have lunch together every day, with the whole team. We try to buy rich, healthy foods to keep our team energised and we make sure to have as little food waste as possible.
  • We donate annually to charities dedicated to people in need and the well-being of our planet.
  • We do not use plastic or cardboard drinking cups, we use mugs and glasses for our (Fair Trade) coffee and tea.

We are still actively looking for more things/projects we can do to make Spryng even more 'green'. Do you also want to reduce your ecological footprint by using SMS or do you have any ideas/suggestions for Spryng to be more environmentally friendly, contact us now at
